EGEE - Enabling Grids for E-sciencE

Third stage of the EGEE (Enabling Grid for E-sciencE) project was launched 1st May 2008. The project is funded by the European Commission (Contract nr INFSO-RI-222667) and Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

During EGEE3 its principal user – the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - starts operations such that the EGEE Grid turns into its production phase. Important technical modifications, stabilizing Grid operations, will be implemented in course of EGEE3 (e.g. new middleware system gLite-3.1 with new services).

In addition, EGEE3 is a testground for the new organization of the Grid. Instead of federations of countries used so far, now it is based on national grid networks (e.g. pl-grid in Poland). This new structure will start in 2010 as the European Grid Initiative (EGI). More information about the EGEE project can be found in the section About EGEE.

Becoming the user of the Grid
