Third stage of the EGEE (Enabling Grid for E-sciencE) project was launched 1st May 2008. The project is funded by the European Commission (Contract nr INFSO-RI-222667) and Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
During EGEE3 its principal user – the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - starts operations such that the EGEE Grid turns into its production phase. Important technical modifications, stabilizing Grid operations, will be implemented in course of EGEE3 (e.g. new middleware system gLite-3.1 with new services).
In addition, EGEE3 is a testground for the new organization of the Grid. Instead of federations of countries used so far, now it is based on national grid networks (e.g. pl-grid in Poland). This new structure will start in 2010 as the European Grid Initiative (EGI). More information about the EGEE project can be found in the section
About EGEE.
